Tucked away at the inland end of the northern Illawarra lies the suburb of Helensburgh. Sometimes referred to as the ‘gateway’ between Sydney and Wollongong,
Helensburgh is surrounded by parkland (the southern end of the Royal National Park and the western side of the Garawarra State Conservation Area).
Home to Australia’s oldest working mine, the suburb owes much of its heritage and place on the map to coal mining.
Estimated Population - 6,383 people (2016)
The hidden gems and highlights:
The Pro's of Helensburgh
The sleepy suburb of Helensburgh has the small town vibes of yesteryear with plenty of modern amenities. With a Coles supermarket, butcher, bread shop, chemist and plenty of other small businesses, everything you need is at your fingertips. You’re also almost exactly halfway between Sydney and Wollongong providing options for employment.
The Con's of Helensburgh
While Helensburgh has a railway station, it is located quite a long way out of town meaning you need a car to access it. This could be slightly problematic for single car families/commuters.
