Local GP Helps Women Thrive!

Finding the time for a breast check and pap test is hard.

Maybe it’s the thought of sitting in an overcrowded waiting room, surrounded by sick kids that puts me off. Maybe it’s that I also have a million questions about my skin and hormones feeling off-balance now that I’m 43, and there’s not enough time for that conversation. Most likely, it’s that I put my own health at the bottom of my long ‘to-do’ list.

But now we have a new choice... right here on our doorstep.

A local GP and mother of three, Dr Jemima Grant, is opening a Women’s Health Service from her own Thrive Skin Clinic, a beautiful, boutique haven in Thirroul.

Traditionally, we’ve had to visit frantic, late-running medical centres for our women’s health concerns. With this new offering from Thrive, we now have the option to access professional, evidence-based care in a beautiful environment, from an all-female team. This isn’t just a new doctor setting up shop - this is the evolution of a new type of women’s healthcare in the Illawarra.

Dr Grant is starting the Women’s Health clinic one day a week on Monday afternoon and evenings, a popular timeslot for professional women and mothers. The type of services she will be offering include:

 - Well Women’s Checks (cervical screening and breast checks)

 - Gynaecological issues such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and endometriosis

 - Fertility and pregnancy planning

 - Menopause management

 - Vulval skin disorders and sexual health.

 - Weight loss is also going to be on the agenda

Thrive will be working with some talented local allied health professionals to support women for success. Some of these consultations can be done via Skype, which is an exciting new development in medicine.

Since Thrive’s opening in 2017, it’s become the ‘go to’ clinic for clients in the Illawarra for the management of adult acne, rosacea and pigment disorders. Dr Grant will continue to see these dermatology patients and do more procedural work herself.

For Dr Grant, the evolution of a clinic offering medical dermatology and women’s health is a natural extension of her personal interests and the type of medical issues she was seeing at Thrive Skin Clinic. This is because there is often an interplay between skin issues and hormones, which changes across the lifespan, and which must be addressed to get great results. Rather than just working from the ‘outer’ appearance as a beauty therapist might, or seeing a skin problem in isolation, as a dermatologist might (for example by prescribing antibiotics), sometimes women need a more holistic approach. This is where Dr Grant’s experience as a general practitioner comes into its own.

As a medical doctor, she can test your general health and hormones, offer lifestyle advice, prescribe medications required, and recommend a specific laser treatment or peels - all while keeping your whole health picture, unique beliefs and expectations in mind. She also works closely with local expert practitioners like naturopaths, personal trainers, dieticians and exercise physiologists as well as referring to gynaecologists, endocrinologists or dermatologists when required.

In addition, the Thrive team of registered nurses and experienced dermal therapists can offer a range of evidence-based treatments to get your skin thriving- medical grade laser and IPL, micro-needling, platelet-rich plasma treatments, medical grade peels and compounded or practitioner strength skin care... the options are many and the outcomes can be life changing, especially for clients who have suffered for years with acne, rosacea or scarring.

Thrive Skin Clinic also offers anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and fat-dissolving injections for those wanting a safe and experienced clinic to provide aesthetic treatments.

For women’s health and dermatology medical consultations, the initial visit costs the same as seeing a private GP, and attracts a Medicare rebate. Dr Grant’s is also one of the few clinics in the Illawarra able to offer a Medicare rebate for severe rosacea managed with IPL and laser treatments.

This new approach to medicine and holistic health encourages all women to put our health at the top of that long ‘to-do’ list. With so much to gain, why wouldn’t you?
