The NSW Rail Museum is where rail heritage comes to life. Located in the historic town of Thirlmere (only 50 minutes from Wollongong), it is Australia's premier rail heritage experience for all ages – a perfect day out for families.
With Australia’s largest collection of heritage rolling stock, state-of-the-art facilities, interactive exhibits for children and so much more, you don’t want to miss a day out at the NSW Rail Museum.
The museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as the Thirlmere Festival of Steam, Day Out With Thomas and regular heritage train trips around Thirlmere, Sydney and regional NSW.

Steam Train Sunday
Visit the NSW Rail Museum on a winter Sunday and enjoy a 45-minute steam train experience from the historic Thirlmere Station to Buxton and return. Whether you’re visiting with friends, sharing stories with your family or reliving the glory days, steam trains operate rain or shine. It’s a unique heritage experience you’ll remember for a lifetime!

Day Out With Thomas
Thomas and Friends make their appearance at the NSW Rail Museum for a fun-filled weekend! Meet the Fat Controller as he oversees all the exciting activities available to families.
What's at the Museum?
The Main Exhibition Building is where you’ll discover how the NSW railways brought life to town and country, while Worker’s Walk describes the many jobs that kept the railways running. The Great Train Hall houses the largest collection of rolling stock in Australia. Climb aboard the carriages to relive some of your favourite rail travel memories or experience the wonderful relics of Australian history for the first time. Then, visit the Roundhouse, where you’ll see a behind-the-scenes view of staff and volunteers working on a variety of locomotives and carriages.

Children’s Birthday Parties
The NSW Rail Museum makes a great venue for your child’s next birthday party! The space can hold 30 to 200 people and the museum staff are happy to assist with organising everything you need for your special event.
